Kochi, Oct 17: The first ODI match between India and Australia on Sunday, Oct 17 was called off due to heavy rain in Kochi.
The continous heavy rain for the last few days resulted in a wet outfield and fresh downpour in the morning. The umpires inspected the ground at 9:00 am but found the condition was not supporting for the opening encounter.
Rain again started by 10:30 am at Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium, forced match referee Chris Broad to abandon the match. Kochi has been witnessing heavy downpour since last three days which washed out the practice sessions of both the teams.
Now Indian and Australian teams will head to Visakhapatnam for the second match on Wednesday, Oct 20. The third match of the three-game series will be at Goa on Sunday, Oct 24.
The organisers have told that they will refund the cost of tickets bought by the 30,000-odd spectators. The ODI series will be crucial for both the sides ahead of the World Cup 2011 in Asia.
