Premier Indian seamer and one-day specialist Praveen Kumar will miss the first ODI against New Zealand scheduled for November 28 in Guwahati due to the fact that he has contracted a fever, the BCCI said in a statement. Veteran paceman Ashish Nehra has been called up to replace him after coming out tops in a fitness test.
Nehra, who is one of India's front-line speedsters in the games shorter version, played the lone ODI against Australia last month, but was not originally chosen in the squad for the one-dayers against New Zealand, inspite of several players being rested.
After the Australia series, Nehra made hinmself available for Test selection, over six years after he had last appeared in the format. However, h was excluded from the Test team that will tour South Africa. Since his international return in June last year, Nehra has appeared in 36 ODIs, taking 54 scalps at an average just under 30. More pertinently, he has not been hampered by fitness concerns and injuries.
