Gambhir injures hand, unlikely for Durba

Just as Zaheer Khan recovers from a hamstring strain to rejoin the Indian team ahead of the Boxing Day Test against South at Durban, the side is struck with some disappointing news. In-form opening batsman Gautam Gambhir, was hit on the knuckles of his left hand during a practice session in the nets on Saturday, Dec 25 and looks unlikely to participate in the upcoming Test.

Although there is no evidence of a fracture, the part of his body is sore and hurting him to the extent that he can't hold a bat comfortably. The news comes as a terribly blow to the touring side since they had to bank on all their premier batsmen to post challenging totals and stop the Proteas from wrapping up the series.

The southpaw looked in utter discomfort during the first innings at Centurion when South African pacers used short deliveries to deal with him. However, Gambhir showed a lot of grit scoring 80 in the second innings. In case Gambhir doesn't get fit in time, reserve opener Murali Vijay will be inducted into the playing XI. However it will be a test of character for Vijay who is not known to be too comfortable while playing short-pitched stuff.
