A double blow for India in the upcoming ODI-series against South Africa. After Virender Sehwasg was ruled out of the series owing to a recurring shoulder injury, the Indian management announced that his opening partner Gautam Gambhir, will also miss the series.
Gambhir has sustained an elbow injury after he was struck by a ball during his 93-run knock of India's first innings in the ongoing Test, and will not be fit enough to play competitive cricket till it heals. Gambhir however, will hold out for one more knock and will bat in India's second innings of the Cape Town Test.
For the upcoming one-day series beginning after Jan 10, Murali Vijay will open the innings with Sachin Tendulkar, who returns to the opening slot after several years. There is no news yet on who will replace Gambhir in the team.
Gambhir had a stellar last one-day series where he also captained India, against tourists New Zealand. He was the top-scorer in that 5-match series with an aggreagte of 329 runs and an average of 109.66 with a strike rate of 110.40. His overall career average is 40.43 from 105 matches.
