India poised for historic series win

India has tryst with destiny. As they take guard at Port Elizabeth in the fourth one-dayer against South Africa in their on-going tour, their maiden series win in South Africa hangs in the balance. The visiting side owes victory to itself. After all, it is no picnic to come back from a crushing 135-run defeat and clinch wins from two mighty-close matches. But there is a spring in their stride and excitement on their breath as the impetus has carried over from one match to the next.

Special kudos to India for putting on such a valiant show even in the absence of their star players. Injuries whisked away Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Parveen Kumar, dealing a quandraple blow to India's confidence. But such steep deprivation did little to dent the spirit of the brave hearts that comprise the team. Indeed, India is playing like a true world class unit, not only knocking back stumps with a disdainful regularity and biffing the ball over boundaries, but also effecting the most sensational catches.

While the dismal showing of the top-order still leaves much to be desired, the team has at least found a centre to bank on. Be it in the belligerence of Pathan or the grittiness of Bhajji or the zeal of Zaheer or the verve of Munaf, the outfit has identified a strength which transcends individual glory and flourishes in true blue cohesion. So stunning has this winning force been behind India's performance over the last week, that a grudging Proteas captain Graeme Smith was led to say that his side should have been 2-1 or 3-zip up.

Team India have scarcely emerged victorious in its many series abroad, but this time around, it seems poised to highlight its oversees exploits with a win. Fans home and away will be backing India to the hilt and with that kind of support, compounded with the top-notch talent and ability in the ranks, the visitors are surely on course for victory. It will be the perfect prelude to the mega-tournament where India will seek to attain world domination. SA is here for the taking. Will India grab it with both hands?
