With the post of the captain of the IPL team the Delhi Daredevils falling vacant due to the fact that last season's skipper Gautam Gambhir has been purchased by the Kolkata Knightriders, Virender Sehwag has been appointed captain of the national capital's side.
But it's believed that Sehwag is something of a reluctant skipper. When offered the job previously, he declined in favour of his opening partner Gambhir. The reason for his action was that he didn't feel he had any prospects of leading Team India and wanted Gambhir to be nurtured for the role by assuming the responsibility of captaining the Daredevils.
This was a similar story to the tale behind the 2010's captaincy of the Kings XI Punjab. Sri Lankan batsman Mahela Jayawardene turned down the offer because having just completed a vigorous stint as skipper of the Sri Lankan side, he didn't feel motivated enough to lead a side again. So that's when Kumar Sangakarra stepped in.
Considering that Sehwag has quite a capable side in the IPL this year, he would probably grow to relish the appointment as captain and excel at the job.
