Canada sprung some early surprises on England at the start of their innings. In just the second over, Canada fast bowler Khurram Chohan had Andrew Strauss caught behind for 1 as the score read 4/1. Then Kevin Pietersen biffed a few powerful blows including 3 fours and a six, but had played one shot to many when he was cleaned up by Chohan for 24 off 28.
Jonathan Trott was playing more cautiously and hence was able to preserve his wicket as Chohan struck for the third time, to remove Ian Bell for 8. Then leg-spinner Balaji Rao came to the party, getting Paul Collingwood stumped for 9 as England were reduced to 86/4 in 20.4 overs.
Trott and Matt Prior tried to stem the rot, taking their side to over 100 in the 25th over. But 40 runs later, John Davison broke the 50-plus run stand to dismiss Trott for 57 off 81 and reduce England to 140/5 in 31.4 overs.
Prior and Michael Yardy brought up their side's 150 in the 33rd over, but Yardy could do little else, falling to the pace of Henry Osinde for 6 off 13 balls. In the same over, Osinde trapped Luke Wright in front for a duck as the score now read a desperate 158/7 in 37 overs.
Then, Stuart Broad and Prior staged a recovery, taking England past 200/7 in the 43rd over. After Broad was bowled by the medium pace of Harvir Baidwan for 22 off 27, Prior pressed on with James Tredwell. But soon, Baidwan got Prior out for 78 off 81 balls in similar fashion as England were looking at the bottom of the barrel at 224/9 in 47.1 overs.
Some powerful blows from the tail took England to 243 before Baidwan wrapped up the innings in 49.4 overs when he had Ajmal Shahzad caught by Rizwan Cheema for 10 off 8.
