Chennai, March 6: Winning the toss and opting to bat first, England's inning got off to tumultuous start. South Africa who had decided to open the bowling with off-spinner Robin Peterson were immediately rewarded. In just the 3rd ball, England captain Andrew Strauss holed out to A B de Villiers at long on for a duck.
Then three balls later, Kevin Pietersen edged Peterson to Jacques Kallis at slip and was on his way for 2 as England had slipped to 3/2 in the first over. In the 5th over, Peterson took a fantastic diving-full-length-to-his-left caught and bowled to dismiss Ian Bell for 5. The slide was continuing for England at 15/3 in 4.4 overs.
But Jonathan Trott and Ravi Bopara stemmed the rot, taking their side to over 50 in the 14th over, courtesy a boundary by Bopara off Morne Morkel. The batsmen kept plugging away for ones and twos and each survived a couple of close calls to take England to 97/3 in 25 overs.
