Mumbai, April 1: Left-arm Indian fast bowler Ashish Nehra has fractured the middle finger of his right hand, raising doubts about his inclusion in Team India's playing XI for the final of the World Cup 2011 against Sri Lanka at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on April 2. He sustained the injury while attempting a catch in the outfield to a ball smashed by Shahid Afridi in the latter overs of India's semi-final against Pakistan at Mohali on Wednesday.
Not known for his deftness in the field, Nehra surprised one and all when he dived forward to take the catch inches after it had apparently bounced. But the effort was lauded by his team-mates and the jam-packed stadium. As the injurt happened on his non-bowling hand, he could still get through his remaining three overs and finished with impressive figures of 2/33 off his ten overs.
Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir who hobbled off the field during the same match, ostensibly due to pulling a musle is said to be in fit condition for the final on Saturday.
Nehra had missed the first two matches of the tournament with a sore back and was brought in for the group-stage game against Netherlands. Against South Africa in Nagpur, he went for 65 runs in 8.4 overs, 16 off which were scored in the last over of the game, consigning India to defeat. He was then left out for India's next two games, before returning for the semi-final.
