Being put into bat, the Deccan Chargers got off a blistering start thanks to some shoddy fielding from Rajasthan Royals up front, which saw five overthrows slip by in the first ball. Then Shikar Dhawan got Jacob Oram away for a four. In the second over, Ishank Jaggi smacked Amit Singh for two consecutive boundaries as the Chargers climbed to 20/1.
Spin was introduced in the third over in the form of Johan Botha, but Jaggi was in no mood to back down, getting him away for a four as well. Then in the 6th over, Dhawan carted Amit Singh for a huge six over midwicket and a four followed. But in trying another almighty heave, mistimed one to long on. Dhawan was on his way for 24 off 15 balls and the Chargers were 40/1 in 4.5 overs.
The Chargers' captain could barely play an innings befitting his stature, getting caught behind off Siddhart Trivedi for a duck. But Bharat Chipli immediately upped the ante, dispatching his first ball for a four. Then leg-break legend and Royal' captain Shane Warne came on to bowl the 7th over, conceding 7 runs in his first over including 4 wides as the Chargers notched up 50.
But Warne came into his own when he tempted Jaggi into trying to loft him over long on only to find the fielder there. The batsman had to walk back for 25 off 28 balls as the Chargers were 71/4 in 11 overs. Just two overs later, Warne foxed Duminy by a ball that didn't turn much having him caught at long off for 14 off 17 balls. The Chargers were tottering at 77/5 in 13 overs.
Then Ravi Teja and Daniel Christian took 8 runs off Menaria in the 15th over as the score moved onto 90/5. In the next over, Christian cut loose, clobbering Botha for a four and six, while running five more runs with Teja. The Chargers had crossed 100. Christain seemed to be on a roll, smashing Amit Singh for a six but Trivedi's medium pacers led to his undoing for 26 off 19 balls as the Chargers slumped to 115/6 in 17.4 overs.
The next to fall was Ravi Teja, who hit Menaria staright into the hands of deep midwicket. He was on his way for 28 off 20 balls as the Chargers had made 130/7 in 19.1 overs. Dale Steyn struck a four before departing and the Chargers finished their innings at 137/8 in 20 overs.
