It was not all a bed of roses for the Chargers who got off to a nervous start. Though Shikar Dhawan smashed Johan van der Wath for two fours in the second over, he holed out to Challengers captain Daniel Vettori in the third off Zaheer Khan for 11 off 9 balls. With Kumar Sangakkara to keep the other opener Sunny Sohal, company, a four came of each of the 4th, 5th and 6th overs and in the 7th over, Sohal clobbered Aravind for two consecutive boundaries as the Chargers moved onto 52/1 in 7 overs.
In the 9th over, Sohal hit a six before lofting Ninan straight into the hands of Saurabh Tiwary at long-on, having to depart for 38 off 37 balls. Then Bharat Chipli and Sangakkara kicked on, taking a four and a six of alternating overs till in the 15th, the latter batsman was caught behind of van der Wath for 36 off 25.
The score was a 113/2 in 14.4 overs. Then with J P Duminy at the other end, Chipli cut loose, smashing two consecutive sixes off Ninan in the 16th over and three back-to-back fours off Zaheer Khan in the 17th.
Duminy got into the act soon after, striking Vettori for a four to bring up the Chargers' 150 in 17.4 overs and knocking a six and boundary off van der Wath in the 19th over before perishing to Zaheer, courtesy a brilliant catch by Kohli at midwicket. Duminy who was out for 22 was followed by Danial Christian who fell in a first ball duck off the last ball. But the Chargers had managed to notch up a competitive 175/5 in their 20 overs.
In reply, the Royal Challengers Bangalore got off to a disastrous start, losing Tillakaratne Dilshan to Ishant Sharma in the second over for 7 before Dale Steyn cleaned up pinch-hitter Zaheer Khan for a duck in the third. Two overs later, Mayank Agarwal had to depart after being caught off Manpreet Gony at mid on for 16 off 13 balls as the Challengers slid to 27/3 in 5 overs.
A couple of overs followed before Gony struck again to have de Villiers caught behind for another duck. A desperate Kohli tried to rebuild with Saurabh Tiwary, but the latter was caught behind off Amit Mishra for 7 off 10 and the visitors were in deeper trouble at 56/5 in 11.1 overs.
Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara then launched a counter-attack, knocking off 6 fours and 2 sixes between them in the next 6 overs before Steyn retaliated with a double strike, removing Pujara for 25 off 15 balls and then Johan van der Wath for a duck in successive deliveries.
The Challengers were 118/7 in 17 overs and then the end came swiftly with Gony removing Kohli for 71 off 51 balls and Christian packing off Ninan for 3. The Challengers finished their 20 overs at 142/9, 33 runs short of the Chargers' total.
