The Chennai Super Kings got off to a circumspect start with just 2 runs coming off Zaheer Khan in the first over and 4 off Daniel Vettori in the second. Then Michael Hussey struck Zaheer for the first four in the 3rd over and Murali Vijay picked up a boundary off Vettori off a misfield in the fourth over as CSK moved to 18/0.
Then after Hussey survived a drop catch off Johan van der Wath, Vijay smashed the bowler for two consecutive fours and a six to take the score to 33/0 in 5 overs. Soon after that, Hussey got into act, hammering off-break Tillakaratne Dilshan for 2 back-to-back boundaries.
Vijay then attacked Ryan Ninan, knocking a six off him to bring up CSK's 50, only to get out next ball by holing out to long off for 31 off 21. But Hussey wouldn't back down. He clobbered a four off van der Wath before Suresh Raina did the same to take the score to 65/1 in at the end of the 8th over. CSK moved onto 80/1 in 10 overs.
Then Raina laid into Ninan, smashing him for a four, a six, another boundary and a double
before getting caught for 29 off 15 as his side slid to 96/2 in 10.5 overs. Hussey tok na single off Virat Kohli to bring up CSK's 100 before the new batsman M S Dhoni, ran two doubles.
In the 15th over, Hussey sent Vettori over midwicket for a six and then hammered him a for a four to notch up his 50 off 42 balls as his side had moved to 126/2 in 15 overs. Then Hussey got Kohli away for two fours in the 16th over.
In the 17th over, Dhoni cut loose, smashing Zaheer for a four and a six before getting caught behind for 22 off 16 as CSK had slipped to 147/3 in 16.3 overs. The new batsman Albie Morkel rounded off the over with a four to bring up CSK's 150. Van der Wath was second time unlucky when Micheal Hussey was dropped off his bowling in the 18th over.
To add insult to injury, Hussey knocked two fours off the bowler as well,, before going after Zaheer as he and Morkel took 8 runs off him in the penultimate over as the score ticked over to 176/3. In the last over, van der Wath got Morkel's wicket and Badrinath as well.
