Being put into bat, the Delhi Daredevils got off to unextraordinary start, though Virender Sehwag straight away assumed the role of aggressor. He knocked a four each of Zaheer Khan in the first over, off Aravind in the second and off Zaheer again in the third. Then David Warner tried to follow suit, striking a boundary off Zaheer in the 5th over to get out to him for 7 in the next ball and the Daredevils were 33/1 in 4.2 overs. After James Hopes settled in with a four off Aravind in the 6th, Sehwag was run out for 25 off 18 balls as the score read 43/2.
But Hopes kept the momentum going, smacking Gayle for two back-to-back boundaries in the 8th over as the hosts moved past 50. But two oves later there was trouble at the other end when Abhimanyu Mithun bowled Matthew Wade for 8 off 9 balls. Then news batsman Venugopal Rao, wasted little time finding a groove, clobbering the same bowler for 2 fours in the 12th over, before Hopes subjected Syed Mohammad to the same treatment in the next. The Daredevils moved past 100 in the 14th over, before Venugopal struck a six off Mithun in the 15th.
However, in the following over, Vettori bowled him for 24 off 21 balls. Then Naman Ojha smashed Vettori for a maximum, before Hopes tucked into Gayle for another boundary. But the latter batsman was out caught behind off Mithun in the penultimate over. Leading a late surge, Irfan Pathan hammered a six each off Mithun and Aravind to take Delhi past 150 and finally to a formidable 160/6 in their 20 overs.
In their reply, the Royal Challneger Bangalore got off to a dramatic start. In just the third ball, Ashok Dinda had Tillkaratne Dilshan out for his second duck of the tournament. Then Kohli smashed a flurry off six fours, two off Dinda and four off Irfan Pathan in the second over as Bangalore raced onto 26/1 in 2 overs. Then Chris Gayle got into the act, clobbering Morne Morkel for a six and a four in the 4th over, before the batsman and his partner teamed up to knock two fours and a six off Dinda as the score read a threating 62/1 in 5 overs.
Kohli then smashed Umesh Yadav for a four and six off the 7th over. In the following over, Gayle hit one more four before he was out to James Hopes for 26 off 14 balls. Kohli immediately took a four and a single to round off the over at 88/2 in 8 overs. A B de Villiers settled in with a four off Yadav but just three balls later was run out for 5 as the score moved onto 95/3 in 8.5 overs. With the first ball of the 10th over, Morkel bowled Kohli for 56 off 38 balls. In the 11th over, new batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Saurabh Tiwary took their side past 100.
But just a couple off overs later, Nagar had Pujara caught at deep midwicket for 7 off 12 balls. Then Tiwary kept the chase going by picking a four off Yadav, while Vettori swatted Pathan for a six. Then after Tiwary clobbered Morkel for another six, the bowler effected a double strike. He removed Tiwary for 18 off 20 balls and Mithun for a duck as the Challengers were at 139/7, requiring 22 off 18 balls. Then Syed Mohammad rounded off the 18th over with two fours off Yadav, reducing the equation for victory to 12 required off the last 2 overs. Vettori and Mohammad took 9 runs off the second-last over before the batting duo took the remaining runs off the last over.
