Kolkata Knight Riders began their chase of Chennai's 114/4 on a far more confident note with Eoin Morgan striking Albie Morkel for the first four off the fourth ball. But off-spinner R Ashwin struck back to bowl the same batsman for 5 off 6 balls. KKR were 9/1 in 1.1 overs. However, captain Gautam Gambhir settled in with a four later in the over and flicked Morkel fine for another boundary in the third over as the hosts moved onto 21/1.
Gambhir and the surviving opener Jacques Kallis took KKR to 31/1 in 5 overs, before Ashwin got another breakthrough. The tweaker removed Gambhir for 16 off 19 balls with KKR at 33/2 in 6 overs. New batsman Manoj Tiwary counter-attacked with a four off Shadab Jakati in the 7th over. Then two overs later, Kallis struck the same bowler for another boundary as KKR moved past 50 in 8.3 overs. At the end of the 10th over, the rains came with KKR just ahead of the Duckworth/Lewis par score at 61/2.
