Winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Kochi Tuskers Kerala got off to a positive start with Michael Klinger smashing Zaheer Khan for a four in the first over, straight over the bowler's head. Then in the second over, Brendon McCullum followed suit, carting Sreenath Aravind for another boundary. In the third over, Klinger struck Zaheer for a fine-leg four as the Tuskers scaled to 20/0.
The batting duo were motoring along, as Klinger picked Aravind for another four. Then McCullum greated off-break Chris Gayle with another couple of boundaries as the Tuskers moved onto 41/1 in 5 overs. But when Daniel Vettori came onto bowl, straight away there was trouble. McCullum spooned a delivery to short third man, having to depart for 22 off 16 balls.
Parthiv Patel settled in with a four and pressed ahead with Klinger to take the Tpast 50 in the 7th over, celebrating with a four. Parthiv had clearly taken on the mantle of aggressor, flicking Vettori fine for a boundary in the 8th over. But Gayle broke Kochi's momentum when he bowled Klinger for 24 off 25 balls as the score read 65/2. Vettori followed up by having the new batsman, captain Mahela Jayawardene, caught behind for 3 off 7 balls as Kochi slid to 72/3 in 10 overs.
Then a sharp piece of work from the keeper A B de Villiers got rid of Parthiv run out for 19 off 14 balls. The Tuskers were deeper in trouble at 73/4 in 10.2 overs. After a couple of quiet overs, Ravindra Jadeja got Gayle away for a four in the 13th over as the Tuskers climbed to 88/4. But then Aravind struck back to have Brad Hodge caught at short fine leg by Zaheer for 5 off 12 balls with the score now reading a precarious 89/5 in 13.3 overs.
In the 16th over, new batsman Raiphi Gomez hit Vettori to the fence to bring up KTK's 100, but was sent back by Aravind a couple of overs later for 7 off 15 balls. Then in the very next over, Zaheer induced Vinay Kumar into hiting a skier which was comfortably caught by Vettori. The Tuskers were 116/7 in 18.4 overs. In the final over, while Abhimanyu Mithun dismissed Jadeja for 23 off 22 balls, R P Singh was run out for a duck as the Tuskers wrapped up their innings at 125/9.
