With Adam Gilchrist for company, Paul Valthaty got off the mark with a cracking cover drive for a four off Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the first over. Valthaty then repeated the shot off Shrikant Wagh and again and again as the hosts climbed to 18/0 in 2 overs. Then in the 4th over, Rahul Sharma got the breakthrough when he induced Gilchrist to hole out to Abhishek Jhunjhunwala in the deep. Gilchrist was on his way for 3 off 4 balls with Punjab at 25/1 in 4 overs.
New batsman Shaun Marsh settled in with a four off Wagh in the 6th over and then smashed a six off Yuvraj in the following over. In the 8th over, Marsh smacked Sharma through the infield to pick up another boundary and took a single to bring up Punjab's 50. But almost immediately, the bowler had Valthaty caught at backward point for 23 off 22 balls. Then Marsh got Mitchell Marsh away for another boundary as the Kings moved onto 60/2 in 9 overs.
In the 10th over, Dinesh Karthik welcomed Jhunjhunwala to the crease by swatting him for a square-leg four. Kumar returned in a strong way to bowl Marsh for 32 off 28 balls and then get David Hussey caught behind for 4 as the score read 94/4 in 14.3 overs. Mandeep Singh took a single to bring up Punjab's 100/4. On that score itself, Karthik perished in the outfield for 30 off 27 balls.
In the 18th over, Waye Parnell had Mandeep Singh caught by Yuvraj in the covers for 6 off 11 balls as the Kings had slipped to 110/6. Then Ryan Harris got off the mark with a boundary but just three balls latyer was dismissed by Marsh for 4 off 4 balls. Punjab were 114/7 in 18.4 overs. In the final over, Parnell picked up his second wicket to get Siddharth Chitnis out for 9 off 9 before the Kings finished thier innings on 119/8.
