Winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Deccan Chargers began their innings on a sobre note with just 4 runs coming off Bhuvaeshwar Kumar in the first over. Then Dwaraka Ravi Teja struck Shrikanth Wagh for the first four in the second over and repeated the shot next ball. In the third over, Ravi Teja went after Kumar, swatting him away for another boundary as the score moved onto 20/0.
In the following over, Dhawan got a life when he was dropped by Wagh at midwicket off the bowling off Wayne Parnell. The batsman made the Warriors immmediately pay for that error when he smacked the same bowler for a four, three balls later. Then Shikar Dhawan got into the act, carting leg-spinner Rahul Sharma for a six as the score moved onto 39/0 in 5 overs.
Dhawan and Ravi Teja teamed up to knock a six and a four off Parnell as the Chargers reached 50/0 in just 6 overs. Captain Yuvraj Singh brought himself onto bowl the 7th over and was successful straight away, removing Dhawan for 24 off 17 balls as the Chargers' score read 51/1 in 6.4 overs. In the very next over, Mitchell March bowled Ravi Teja for 30 off 27 balls, pegging back the Chargers to 56/2 in 7.3 overs.
But captain Sangakkara and J P Duminy tried to weather the storm, reaching 72/2 in 10 overs. However, the tournament's second most successful bowler Rahul Sharma, soon trapped Sanga in front for 12 off 13 balls as the Chargers were in a spot of bother at 76/3 in 11 overs. After a quiet 13th over, Duminy and Daniel Christian each took a four off Kumar. But in the next over, Yuvraj got Christian lbw for 10 off 11 balls as the score read 98/4.
Bharat Chipli and Duminy then took the Chargers to 100 at the end of the 15th over. In the following over, Chipli got Marsh away for a four, but a quiet 17th over followed. The batting duo then scampered 7 runs in the 18th over, but in the 19th, Marsh effected a triple strike by removing Duminy for 30 off 30 balls and Sunny Sohal and Amit Mishra for ducks. In the final over, Dale Steyn struck a desperate boundary before being packed off by Parnell as the Chargers finished their innings on 136/8.
