With his usual partner Paul Valthaty, Kings XI Punjab's Adam Gilchrist got his side off to a decent start. He struck Irfan Pathan for the first four with the last ball of the first over. Then after a sobre second over from Morne Morkel, Gilly and Vally took 10 runs off Pathan in the 3rd, including a boundary and four overthrows.
In the 4th over, Valthaty dispatched Morkel to the fence before he was dropped at first slip off the next ball. But in the following delivery, Gilchrist was caught at mid-on for 9 off 9 balls and the Kings were 21/1. Valthaty then finished off the fifth over in style, striking two fours off Varun Aaron as the score moved onto 33/1. In the following over, Valthaty and new batsman Shaun Marsh each took a four off Salvi.
In the 8th over, Valthaty lauched Salvi over square leg for a six to bring up the Kings' 50. Then Marsh celebrated with a square four and followed up with another boundary off Hopes in the 9th. In the 11th over, Valthaty tonked Hopes for two sixes and a four to notch up his half-century off just 38 balls.
Then Marsh got into the act, thumping Sridharan Sriram for 25 runs off the 13th over, including 3 sixes and a four as the score soared to 115/1 in 13 overs. Then Marsh brought up the 100-run partnership when he slapped Morkel for a boundary in the 14th over. The Daredevils finally got some relief when Pathan had Marsh caught in the deep for 47 off 28 balls, before the same bowler cleaned up Valthaty for 62 off 50.
In the 16th over, Karthik was dropped by the keeper off Aaron for 2, the ball racing away to the third man boundary. But Salvi pegged back the hosts further when had David Hussey caught for 3 as the Kings slipped to 138/4. Then Mandeep Singh upped the ante, knocking off two boundaries off Pathan to bring up the Kings' 150 in the penultimate over.
However, Pathan came back to bowl Mandeep for 11 off 7 as the score now read 156/5 in 18.4 overs. In the final over, Karthik smacked Salvi for two boundaries before getting caught at point for 27 off 19 balls with the Kings at 168/6. The kings finished uip their innings at 170/6 in their 20 overs.
