Junaid stars in Pakistan win over Ire

Belfast, May 28: Pakistan beat Ireland by 7 wickets with 51 balls remaining in the rain-marred first game of the two match ODI series. The visitors bowled out the hosts for 96 runs in under 20 overs with Paul Stirling scoring 39 off 22 balls and Junaid Khan taking 4/12 in 5 overs, before Pakistan romped home in the 28th over.

With rain reducing the contest to 38 overs a side, Ireland's innings was kick-started by some fiery batting from opener Paul Stirling. After losing his partner Ed Joyce to Tanvir Ahmed for 1, Stirling attacked the same bowler, knocking off three fours and a six off him in the 4th over and the following up with two boundaries off Umar Gul in the next over as Ireland moved onto 39/1 in 5 overs. But then Junaid Khan struck back to remove Stirling for 39 off 22 balls as the score read 44/2 in 5.5 overs.

Alex Cusack was the next to depart, getting out to Gul for a duck. Captain William Porterfield srtruck four off Junaid before getting caught behind off Gul for 4 off 17 balls as Ireland were further in trouble at 51/4 in 8.3 overs. Then in the 12th over, Junaid compounded Ireland's woes when he affected a double strike, bowling Kevin O'Brien for 15 off 18 balls before getting Andrew White caught behind for a golden duck as the home side slipped to 66/6.

Gary Wilson fought back, by smacking two consecutive fours off Tanvir Ahmed in the next over, but soon he was packed off by Saeed Ajmal who had him caught behind for 11 off 23 balls. Trent Johnston struck a boundary to take the score to 89/7 at the end of 18 overs. But the Irish tail didn't wag with Younis Khan getting John Mooney out for 7 off 18 before Ajmal took care off Johnston for 6 off 8 and Boyd Rankin for a golden duck. Ireland were all out for 98 in 19.6 overs.

In their reply, Pakistan got off to a cautious start making just 5/0 at the end of the four overs and reaching 50/0 in 15 overs. The openers Taufeeq Umar and Mohammad Hafeez had just a hit a handful of boundaries between them until then. Runs kept trickling along till in the 23rd over, Cusack got the breakthrough when he had Umar caught at slip for 23 off 62 balls as the score read 73/1 in 22.2 overs.

The next to depart was Hafeez when he was bowled by Cusack for 52 off 84 balls. Pakistan were now 82/2 in 25 overs. Cusack got his third wicket when he had Asad Shafiq caught behind for 4 off 12 balls, before Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan took Pakistan to victory in the 28th over.
