PCB pulls up Shahid Afridi for quitting!

Lahore, June 1: In a twist to the tale of just-retired Pakistan one-day captain Shahid Afridi's spat with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the latter has decided to take action against him for apparently breaching several codes of conduct. Primary among these transgressions is Afridi's vociferous and blatant complaints about the board to the media, for which he has been slapped with a show-cause notice. To add insult to injury, the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt has stated that the management has no issues with Afridi's retirement and have even suspended his central contract.

"It was disappointing to hear what he said," Butt told ESPNcricinfo, "and it wasn't correct or true. It was wrong of him to do that. If he doesn't want to play under this administration, then he's welcome. We've detailed several instances where he has breached the code of conduct and will issue a show-cause notice to him, which he has seven days to respond to."

Though the board met on Monday to ostensibly discuss the budget for the coming year, the debate over Afridi's actions took centre stage for much of the discussion. There was even talk of withdrawing NOCs issued to Afridi for a T20 stint in Hampshire as well as participation in a Sri Lanka's Twenty20 League to be held in July.

As though that were not bad enough, Afridi finds himself in more hot water for announcing his retirement to the media instead of first to the board, which is the standard protocol delineated in player's contracts. Such flouting of the rules would mean that all the other terms and conditions surrounding the contract are also held in abeyance. The PCB is soon to release a press release detailing its plans concerning Afridi.
