India floor Windies in tour opening T20

Port of Spain, June 5: After wobbling in their innings, India recovered to post a challenging 159/6 before limiting the Windies to 16 runs short of the score in the only Twenty20 match of the tour. India's Subramanian Badrinath top-scored for his side with 43 off 37 balls, while Parthiv Patel (26 off 20 balls), Rohit Sharma (26 off 23 balls) and quickfire 15s from Yusuf Pathan and Harbhajan Singh took India to their competitive total. This was despite the fact that Windies captain Darren Sammy pegged back the visitors by taking 4/16 in his four overs. In their reply, the Windies were slow and shaky off the blocks stumbling to 3/88 in 15.3 overs. Then even a late flourish from newcomer Christopher Barnwell wasn't enough to overcome the tight Indian bowling.

Being put into bat, India didn't have a comfy time at first. The first three overs yielded no boundaries and the fall of Shikar Dhawan's wicket for 5 off 11 balls as the score read 13/1 in 3 overs. Then Parthiv Patel knocked a four each off Darren Sammy and Ravi Rampaul in the next two overs, before Virat Kholi slapped Andre Russell for two boundaries in the 6th. In the same over, Parthiv struck the first six of the innings.

However, in the next over, there was double trouble as Sammy removed Kohli for 14 off 12 balls and Parthiv, for 26 off 20 balls. India has slumped to 48/3 in 7 overs. Suresh Raina took India over 50, but perished to Sammy soon after, for 2 off 6 balls. Then Rohit Sharma and Badrinath consolidated for while. In the 16th over, the batting duo smashed a four and a six off Rampaul to take the score past 100/4.

Badrinath went after leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, knocking two boundaries off him and in the following over, after Sharma carted Christopher Barnwell for a six, he was bowled for 26 off 23 balls as India slid to 128/4 in 17.4 overs. However, Yusuf Pathan and Harbhajan Singh made the most of the last 2 1/2 overs, knocking off three sixes and a four between them as India wrapped up their innings at 159/6 in 20 overs.

The Windies' chase started off slowly as well. Lendl Simmons struck the first four in the 3rd over off Praveen Kumar, before Fletcher lofted off-break R Ashwin for a six. But as this bowler so often does, Ashwin came back to remove Simmons for 9 off 9 balls, before Munaf Patel dismissed Fletcher for 11off 16 balls. But Marlon Samuels tried to wrest back the initiative with two fours to round off the 5th over at 30/2.

Several quiet overs followed as Samuels and Darren Bravo took the score past 50 in the 9th over. In the 15th over, Bravo smacked Praveen for two boundaries as the score moved onto 85/2. Then Harbhajan hit back with a double strike, sending back Samuels for 27 off 29 and Bravo for 41 off 41 balls.

Almost immediately, Praveen removed Sammy for a duck as the score read 93/5 in 16.2 overs. Christopher Barnwell tried to keep the flame alive with three sixes and two fours, while Danza Hyatt contributed a four and six in the last over. But that was only enough for the Windies to reach 143/5, 16 runs short of India's score.
