India limit Windies to 214/9 in 1st ODI

Port of Spain, June 6: The formidable Indian bowling attack pegged back the West Indies at several junctures to keep the hosts down to 214/9 in 50 overs in the first ODI between the two sides of the ongoing tour. After the top-order flopped, the middle order came to the fore with Ramnaresh Sarwan (56 off 94 balls) and Marlon Samuels (55 off 75 balls), but they batted too slowly as the Indians kept a tab on the run-flow. Harbhajan Singh was the most effective bowler taking 3/32 with excellent support from Praveen Kumar (2/47) and Munaf Patel (2/37).

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, the West Indies got off to a circumspect start. Kirk Edwards and Lendl Simmons struck only a couple of fours between them in the first five overs as the score reached 21/0. In between, Rohit Sharma dropped Edwards off Munaf Patel. But in the 7th over, Praveen Kumar drew first blood when he had Simmons caught by Bhajji at mid off as the score read 23/1 in 6.1 overs.

Darren Bravo tried to counter-attack by slapping a four off Munaf, but a few balls later was caught by Rohit at slip as the Windies slipped to 28/2 in 7.5 overs. Then Ramnaresh Sarwan joined Edwards and began to rebuild very cautiously, crossing 50/3 in the 15th over.

Harbhajan Singh was brought into the attack and almost straight away caused problems for the batting duo. In the 19th over, he had Edwards caught a slip for 21 off 45 balls. The Windies slid to 59/3 when Marlon Samuels came to the crease. The Indian bowlers kept on the pressure as the new pair tried desperately to consolidate.

The batters took 11 runs off Yusuf Pathan in the 25th over, in a rare attempt to up the flagging run rate. The Windies then moved past 100/3 in the 31st over. Then in the 38th over, Sarwan began to up the ante, striking two consecutive fours off Munaf. But the bowler immediately came back to have the batsman caught behind for 56 off 94 balls.

With Dwayne Bravo for company, Samuels took the Windies over 150/4 in the 39th over. Then Bravo took over, smashing Amit Mishra for two sixes in the 42nd over. In the very next over however, Suresh Raina pegged back the hosts when he bowled Samuels for 55 off 75 balls. And a few overs later, Bhajji brought Bravo's belligerence to an end when he had him stumped for 22 off 20 overs.

The score was 191/6 in 45th over. Bhajji got his third wicket two overs later when he trapped Carlton Baugh in front for 16 off 17 balls. Then Windies captain Darren Sammy took his side past 200, but was unable to do much else as Praveen trapped him lbw for 4 off 5 overs. Soon afterwards, Raina removed Devendra Bishoo for a duck. The last over yielded 8 runs thanks largely to a boundary from Ravi Rampaul as the Windies ended their innings at 214/9.
