Windies set India 241 to win 2nd ODI

Port of Spain, June 8: The West Indies squandered a positive start in the second one-dayer against India wherein they reached 101/1 in 21 overs before finishing up on 240/9. Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra was instrumental in reducing the the hosts to 197/7 in 44 overs with outstanding figures of 4/31. The West Indies top-order scored well but rather slowly with Lendl Simmons 53 coming off 84 balls and Ramnaresh Sarwan's 56, off 90 balls, even as Kirk Edwards (25 off 28 balls) and Marlon Samuels (36 off 32 balls) tried to move things along.

The Windies innings began on a robust note with Kirk Edwards striking two fours off Munaf Patel in the fourth over, before knocking a boundary off Praveen Kumar in the fifth as the score moved onto 21/0. Then Lendl Simmons knocked a four each off the same two pacemen in the 7th and 8th overs.

In the 12th over, Edwards carted Harbhajan for a six to bring up the Windies' 50/0. But in the next over, leg-spinner Amit Mishra had him caught behind for 25 off 28 balls as the Windies' score read 57/1 in 12.1 overs. New batsman Ramnaresh Swarwan smacked a four each in the 14th and 16th over, while Simmon's lofted Mishra for a maximum in the 15th over.

The Windies were in the strong position of 82/1 in 16 overs and by the end of 21 overs had moved past 100. Simmon struck Yusuf Pathan for another six to celebrate. But in the 27th over, he was stumped off the same bowler for 53 off 84 balls. The Windies had slipped to 125/2 in 26.5 overs.

Then in the 34th over, Marlon Samuels hit a four off Suresh Raina to bring up the Windies 150/2. In an attempt to up the run-rate, Samuels took a four off Mishra in the 35th over and then after smashing Pathan for a four and a six in the next over, perished to him for 36 off 32 balls. The score read 175/3 in 36 overs at that juncture.

Munaf then saw the back off a very slow Sarwan for 56 off 90 balls as the Windies slid to 192/4 in 41st over. In the very next over, Mishra trapped Kieron Pollard in front for a duck, reducing the Windies to 192/5 in 42 overs. Compounding the hosts' woes, Mishra effected a double strike in the 44th over. He got rid of Dwayne Bravo for 8 off 17 balls and bowled Carlton Baugh for 2 off 9 balls to leave the Windies reeling at 197/7 in 44 overs.

Sensing the end to their innings was imminent, captain Darren Sammy and Ravi Rampaul struck up a partnership, striking four boundaries and one six between them as the score moved to 221/7 in 47 overs. Then Munaf removed Rampaul for 14 off 16 balls and Devendra Bishoo for a duck, but Sammy kept pummeling away to take the Windies to 240/9 in 50 overs, with himself not out on 22 off 19 balls.
