Russell's heroics take Windies to 225/8

North Sound (Antigua), June 11: The West Indies posted a total of 225/8 in 50 overs in the crucial third OI against India, thanks largely to a rescue act by Andre Russell (92 off 64 balls) and Carlton Baugh (36 of 73 balls), who put on 78 runs for the 8th wicket. The Windies had been moving along fairly well at 65/1 in 14.4 overs till Indian leg-break Amit Misha (3/28) rattled the middle order as the Windies lost 6 wickets for 31 runs in about 15 overs. Russell was undoubtedly the saving grace for the Windies, blasting 5 sixes and 8 fours in his knock to revive his side.

No sooner had the Windies begun their innings, than already there was trouble. In the second over itself, Munaf Patel trapped Kirk Edwards in front for a duck as the score read 0/1. But Edwards partner Lendl Simmons tried to counter-attack by taking a four off the same bowler in the 4th over and a boundary and a six off Munaf again in the 6th over. Simmons and the new batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan struck a few boundaries between them as the score moved past 50/1 in the 11th over.

In the 15th over, Sarwan was run out for 28 off 38 balls as the Windies slipped to 65/2 in 14.5 overs. Then leg-spinner Amit Mishra struck, getting Marlon Samuels stumped for 1 off 10 balls in the 18th over. Mishra returned in his next over, to remove the new-comer Danza Hyatt for 1 off 5 balls by getting him clean bowled. And then in the 22nd over, Mishra got his third wicket by seeing the back of Simmons for 45 off 68 balls as the Windies had slid to 77/5.

But the Windies slide didn't stop there. Off-break Harbhajan Singh came to the party to have Kieron Pollard caught behind for 6 off 16 balls. The Windies were in disarray for 85/6 in 24.4 overs. Then Munaf had a successful returning spell when he got captain Darren Sammy caught behind for 3 off 14 balls as the score read 96/7 in 29.3 overs. Andre Russell and Carlton Baugh tried to salvage the situation, taking the Windies past 100 in the 32nd over before pressing on defiantly.

Russell knocked two fours off Praveen Kumar in the 36th over as the score moved onto 121/7. The batsman continued to play aggressively, striking a four off Virat Kohli in the 38th over and two consecutive sixes off Yusuf Pathan in the 40th. In the next over, Baugh and Russell scampered a couple of singles to bring up the Windies' 150/7. Pushing for ones and twos, the batting duo took the score to 167/7 in 44 overs.

Then in the 46th over, Munaf came back to break the partnership at 78, sending back Baugh for 36 off 73 balls as the Windies were again in trouble at 174/8 in 45.2 overs. But then after Russell notched up 50 off 50 balls, he went beserk, clobbering Indian captain Suresh Raina for two sixes and two fours in the penultimate over, thus taking the Windies past 200. He finished off the innings with a flourish, knocking a six and a four off Praveen. The Windies had made 225/8 with Russell not out on 92 off 64 balls.
