Pollard takes Windies to 249/8 vs Ind

North Sound, June 13: The Windies appeared to be sinking to another dire situation in the fourth one-dayer against India at 103/5 in 26.4 overs. But then Kieron Pollard (70 off 72 balls) and Carlton Baugh (39 off 57 balls) stemmed the rot and fought back with a significat 96-run stand for the 6th wicket as the Windies signed off at 249/8. Praveen Kumar was the most successful India bowler, finishing with figures of 3/37 in 10 overs.

One is uncertain whether the Windies even play for pride anymore as they got off to another poor start in their innings. In just the second over, new-comer Danza Hyatt was caught at backward of point off Indian come-back pacer Ishant Sharma, and was on his way for 1 as the score read 3/1. Praveen Kumar made it 12/2 when he had Ramnaresh Sarwan caught at point for 1 as well. But surviving opener Lendle Simmon retaliated by carting Ishant for a four and a six to round off the 6th over at 24/2.

A quiet period followed as Darren Bravo and Simmons tried to consolidate. The former batsman smacked a four off off-break R Ashwin to bring up the Windies' 50 in 12.5 overs. In the next over, Simmons attacked leg-spinner Amit Mishra, sending him for two consecutive sixes. But at the end of the 16th over, Mishra got his revenge when he sent back Simmon's partner for 15 off 36 balls as the Windies slipped to 65/3 in 16 overs.

Mishra and Yusuf Pathan pummeled away at the batsmen, but Simmons could not be stopped en route to a 50, which he notched up off 57 balls by the end of the 20th over. However, Marlon Samuels couldn't keep up his end and was trapped by Mishra in front for 8 off 21 balls. The Windies slid to 89/4 in 23.1 overs at that juncture with Kieron Pollard, the new man at the crease.

Then, no sooner did the Windies move past 100/4, than Simmons was run out for 67 off 78 balls and the hosts were in deeper trouble at 103/5 in 25.4 overs. Pollard took some time to settle in with Carlton Baugh, before going beserk. He carted Manoj Tiwary for a six and a four and rounded off the 32nd over with a triple as the score moved onto 126/5. The batting duo then completed the 50 partnership, simultaneously taking the Windies past 150 in the 39th over.

In the 41st over, Pollard took a single off Ashwin to bring up his 50 off 58 balls. The tall Trinidadian had no compunctions about taking on the Indian spinners and carted Mishra for a six and four in 44th over. But in the next over, off-break Ashwin had him caught at long-off for 70 off 72 balls as the scoreboard now read 199/6. The new man in the middle Andre Russell kept the momentum going, straight off taking a four off Ashwin as the Windies moved past 200.

In the 46th over, the batting pair teamed up to knock thre fours off Ishant Sharma as the Windies raced to 219/6 in 46 overs. Russell appeared to be carrying on his devastating form from the previous match, sending Mishra for a six and a four in the 47th over. But in the penultimate over, Praveen Kumar effected a double strike, sending back Baugh for 39 off 57 balls and then Russell for 25 off 14 balls. 7 runs came off the last over, including for leg-byes which took the hosts to a challenging 249/8.
