Windies reduce India to 69/4 at Lunch

Kingston, June 20: On Day 1 of the first Test against the Windies of India's ongoing tour, the visitors suffered a quartet of early setbacks. They lost openers Murali Vijay (8) and debutant Abhinav Mukund (11), before VVS Laxman got out for 12 and Virat Kohli joined him for 4, leaving Rahul Dravid (30) and Suresh Raina (0) batting with the score at 69/4 at Lunch. Windies' paceman Ravi Rampaul dismissed both the openers while leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo took care of VVS Laxman (12) and Fidel Edwards sent back Virat Kohli (4).

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, India got off to a shaky start. Though Abhinav Mukund hit Fidel Edwards for the first four of the innings in the opening over itself, Ravi Rampaul struck back in the fourth. He had the other opener Murali Vijay, caught by Devendra Bishoo at backward point for 8 off 12 balls as India's score read 15/1 in 3.5 overs. With Rahul Dravid the new man in, several quiet overs followed as the Windies pacemen kept the heat on India.

Then at the end of the 12th over, Mukund's apparent struggle came to an end when he was bowled by Rampaul off an inside edge and India were 30/2 in 12 overs. The new man in the middle VVS Laxman, hit a four off Darren Sammy in the 15th over, before Dravid followed suit, smacking Rampaul for another boundary. In the 20th over, Laxman came in for some luck, getting dropped at mid on off Edwards. Later in the over, the batsman took a single to bring up India's fifty.

Two overs later, Dravid clobbered Edwards for a couple of fours. But in the next over, leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo had Laxman caught at slip with his first ball of the match. The batsman was on his way for 12 off 31 balls with India in the precarious position of 64/3 in 22.1 overs. Virat Kohli joined Dravid at the crease and settled in with a four off Edwards. But he was soon caught behind off the same bowler, for 4, as India slipped to 69/4 in 25.3 overs when lunch was called.
