London, July 21: It was a quiet start to a much-anticipated Day 1 of the first Test between visitors India and hosts England, with the latter put into bat. England scored 43/1 at Lunch with Alastair Cook being the lone wicket to fall, courtesy Zaheer Khan.
With conditions squarely against batsmen, England's innings got off to watchful start. Openers Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss were content mainly just leaving the outswing of Zaheer Khan and Praveen Kumar alone.
Just one boundary came off the first 10 overs as the score trickled to 19/0. Then shirking off his warm-up match woes, Zaheer struck by trapping Cook in front for 12. The deadly delivery was an off-cutter which beat Cook for pace.
One-down batsman Jonathan Trott struck up a partnership with Strauss as both batsmen started to find a groove. But Trott came in for some luck when off-break Harbhajan Singh nearly had him caught at slip in his first over. The batting pair played out the remaining few overs to lunch with the score at 43/1 in 21 overs.
