Trott stabilises England on rain-hit Day

London, July 22: England scored 127/2 on Day 1 of the first Test against India before rain and bad light intervened to prevent any play in the last session of play. The hosts' top-order batsman Jonathan Trott steadied the English innings with a brave, unbeaten 58 along with Kevin Pietersen who made 22 not out. Trott played the Indian pace trio of Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan with a certain degree of ease while even off-break Harbhajan Singh couldn't faze the right-hander. Cutting and driving, he brought up his half-century off 89 balls in the 45th over.

Earlier in the day, Indian pace spearhead Zaheer Khan pegged back England to 62/2 by removing both openers. In the 11th over of the day, Zak trapped Alastair Cook in front for 12 with an off-cutter that beat the batsman for pace. Then 13 overs later, Zaheer struck again when Andrew Strauss attempted an ugly pull shot from outside off which was snapped up by Ishant Sharam at deep square leg. Struss was on his way for a watchul 22.

However, there was bad news for India in the 42nd over when Zaheer pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. He hobbled off the field and the consequent baby over was completed by Praveen. At stumps on Day 1, there was no word yet on whether Zaheer would be fit enough to pick up the attack on DaY 2.
