New Delhi, July 23: Will Indian batting genius Sachin Tendulkar get the Bharat Ratna after all? The calls for his conferment with this, the highest Indian civilian honour, have grown louder since he became the first batsman to notch up over 50 Test centuries in Dec last year.
After several political figureheads and celebrities threw their weight behind such a move, now the Home Ministry is calling on the PMO to bestow the Little Master with the award. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had met with President Pratibha Patil over the prospect, but the idea seemed to have been shelved since.
There was a fair amount of opposition to the suggestion as no sports person had ever been conferred with the Ratna. So in order to nullify that argument, the Home Ministry has come up with the recommendation to create a separate category for sports, under which Tendulkar can be handed the award.
