Trent Bridge, July 29: He is hailed as the most elegant batsman in the Indian run-factory with a repertoire of shots that would put the past masters to shame. From the wristy flicks to the sublime cover-drives, Laxman is a study in class. His exploits while India is on tour constitute the stuff of legend. Furthermore, VVS Laxman's subdued personality presents the perfect counter-point to his potent batting acumen.
It only ensues that he possesses the perfect temperament for a Test specialist. But if ever India needed his genius to surface, it would be on the surface of Trent Bridge over the next five days. After all, he together with his compatriot team-mates are psyching themselves up for a crucial joust with England.
He has unabashedly exhibited his century-making prowess against several teams, but alas, England still remains unconquered territory in his diary. Fifteen years into his illustrious career, the time is ripe for a Laxman special in Ole Blighty.
Another characteristic malady of Laxman's performance is that like almost the rest of the Indian batting line-up, he needs the first Test of a tour to bring himself up to speed. Thus, as history decrees, the Hyderabadi batsman was not quite his destructive self at Lord's this time around, although his 10 and then 56 in that Test, indicated that he might have secured a groove.
While the aisles at Trent Bridge may be abuzz with talk of Sachin Tendulkar's impending century of centuries, Laxman is due for a ton as well. He had an unfortunate tryst with the 90s in South Africa last Dec where he anyway played a pivotal role in India's series-equalising second Test.
Now, all eyes will be on Mr Very Very Special to see if he can take the fight to a formidable English attack and come out tops at Trent Bridge. He scored an unimpressive 22 and 14 nine years ago at this ground. Now, the moment is nigh when Laxman should put the record straight , by showing he can twist history to his liking.
