Cook's big ton gives England lead of 232

Birmingham, Aug 12: After a pivotal second session of play on Day 2 of the Edgbaston Test, England had reached a comfortable 319/2 in 82 overs with Alastair Cook sitting pretty at 129 and Kevin Pietersen rendering him solid support at 36. With the lead at nearly a 100, the duo went on to pumell a listless Indian attack, completing their century stand at 352, shortly before paceman Paveen Kumar dismissed Pietersen for 63. Then Eoin Moran joined forces with Cook to take England to 456/3 at stumps on Day 2, the former not out on 44 and the latter going great guns at 182. England's overall lead was at 232 with 7 wickets remaining.

After tea, England speeded up the scoring rate with the fours coming frequently, especially in the 87th over, when Pietersen smashed Ishant Sharma for 3 boundaries to notch up his 50. Eventually, after the batting duo had put on a stand of 122 and Cook had notched up his 150 along the way, Praveen managed to trap Pietersen in front of the stumps with the score now at 374/3.

However, India's woes only continued with Eoin Morgan offsetting the pressure courtesy two fours off Praveen in the 95th over, which took the score within sight of 400. Surely enough, within four overs, England had reached that landmark. The remaining 15 overs of the day, yielded 56 runs including 4 fours and a drop catch, courtesy Sreesanth from Morgan off Ishant.
