Harare, Aug 13: Carrying on from their recent Test win against the Bangladeshi touring side, Zimbabwe effected a strong start to the 5-match ODI series, romping home by 6 wicket with 52 balls to spare. New-comer Zimbabwean paceman Brian Vitori picked up 5/30 to bundle out the opponents for 184, while opener Visu Sibanda scored a match winnings 96.
Being put into bat, Bangladesh straight off felt the sting of a fiery Vitori who ripped through the top order by dismissing seasoned batsmen Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Shariar Nafees and Mohammad Ashraful in quick succession. At 33/4 in 13.3 overs, the tattered Bangladeshis tried to put on a rescue act. After Mohamudullah departed for 5 with the score at 43/5, captain Shakib Al Hasan joined forces with Mushfiqar Rahim to go about the repair-work.
The batting duo put on 100-run stand before Hamilton Masakadza removed Hasan for 53 as the score now read 148/6 in 40 overs. Rahim however, pressed on and strung together smallish stands with the latter order, before Bangladesh folded for 184 in the 49th over.
In reply, Zimbabwe's openers began their side's innings confidently, before Brendan Taylor was foxed by Shakib Al hasan for 10, making the score 26/1. Then a gritty Visu Sibanda and Masakadza took their side to 112 before a runout from Mamuhdullah saw the back of Masakadza. Then Bangladesh must have sensed a collapse was in the offing when pacer Rubel Hossain removed Tatenda Taibu and Craig Erwine for ducks.
Even though, Zimbabwe was in a spot with the score at 124/4 in 24.2 overs, new batsman Forster Mutizwa weathered the storm along with a firm Sibanda. The duo then took their side to within sight of victory before Hossain picked up his third and fourth wickets, removing Sibanda and Elton Chigumbura. But Mutizwa and Propser Utseya guided their side home with just under 9 overs to spare. Thus Zimbabwe go 1-0 up in the 5-match series.
