ICC endorses Lanka's to host World T20

Colombo, Sept 21: The ICC chief executive officer Haroon Lorgat today expressed confidence that Sri Lanka will host successful Twenty20 World Cup Cricket on par with arrangements at three previous editions in South Africa, England and the West Indies.

"The ICC World Twenty20 is now a marquee event in Twenty20 cricket where nations face each other for the most coveted title in the shortest format of the game," Lorgat said here.

"Nothing beats nation-versus-nation contests and when these battles take place in the newest, sharpest and quickest form of the game, you can feel the excitement in fans," he added.

India and England, the defending champions, are placed in the same group, the ICC announced today at the launch of next year''s tournament to be hosted by Sri Lanka.

India and England will be joined by a qualifying team in Group A while Australia, West Indies and a qualifier are drawn in Group B.

Sri Lanka, South Africa and Zimbabwe form Group C and Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh are in Group D.

Two qualifiers would come from a tournament for the non Test playing nations which will be held in UAE from March 13 to 24.

The Twenty20 World Cup will be played from September 18 to October 7 next year with Hambantota's Mahinda Rajapaksa stadium hosting three matches, Pallekele nine games and capital Colombo 15 matches.
