Suresh Raina to lead UP Ranji team

Kanpur, Sep 24: Left-handed batsman Suresh Raina was today (Sept 24) named as captain of the Uttar Pradesh Ranji team while paceman R P Singh was appointed his deputy.

Former state Ranji cricketer Rizwan Shamshad will be the new batting coach of the side. The decisions were taken at Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association's Annual General Meeting (AGM).

UPCA secretary and IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said if Raina is unavailable while on national duty, RP will lead the side.

Asked why the UPCA went for a former state player for the job of batting coach, he said at present this was the best option.

"We are still searching for a coach who has played for the country and the time we get somebody, he will be handed over the reins of the team. We want our players to learn modern techniques of the game," Shukla told reporters after the meeting.
