Bangalore, Oct 7: Arun Karthik hit a last ball six off Daniel Cristian helped Royal Challengers Bangalore qualify to the semi-final beating South Australian Redbacks by two wickets.
Chasing a target of 215 to book a place in the semi-finals of the Champions League Twenty20, RCB needed 15 runs in the last over which came down to the last ball with 6 runs to win it for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
"The earlier ball I faced off him was a slower ball which I couldn't connect. So as he ran into bowl the last ball, I had decided that either it would be a slower ball or a yorker," the 26-year-old said on Thursday evening.
"So I was virtually ready for the slower ball. I waited for it, and as it came onto my bat, I gave it an almighty heave," Karthik said.
Indians relived the Sixer Javed Miandad hit of Chetan Sharma's full toss in the last ball of 1986 Austral-asia Cup final in Sharjah. "Yes, I have seen it on TV, And I was reminded about it by Anil Kumble just after I came back to the dressing-room. He told me 'You have done a Javed Miandad'." he said.
While wickets fell quickly RCB had to take it to the last ball of the innings with Arun Karthik and S. Aravind in the middle. "That was our aim, to be in the game till the last ball. Aravind did his part and I am happy I could contribute as well when it mattered most," Karthik said.
Despite the massive target, RCB started well with a smashing partnership between Kohli and Dilsan and fall of wickets in quick succession put RCB's chances of qualifying in jeopardy, but Karthik never lost hopes. "Virat and Dilshan played brilliant knocks and we knew we had a chance going into the last five overs. Even when wickets were falling, Anil bhai said that we should win with an over in hand. There were never any negative thoughts in the dug-out," he added.
Arun Karthik is a right-hand batsman who plays for Tamil Nadu. Karthik scored a century in his first class debut against Karnataka. Karthik was part of the Chennai Super Kings in IPL3 and was picked up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore before IPL 2011.
"This is easily the best moment of my career". "The stage is big, there's such a huge crowd. This is something unparallel to what I have achieved till now. What happened after the match, is in fact, still a blur", he said.
Royal Challengers Bangalore will take on New South Wales blues in the semi-final and hope to make it to the final in Chennai.
