Colombo, Nov 23: Sri Lanka recall rookie Ajanta Mendis for the upcoming tour of South Africa as selectors are running short of options due to injuries to key players.
Mendis, was a part of the 16 member squad for the three test matches before being excluded from the series against Pakistan in UAE, which Srilanka lost 1-0.
Similarly Dilhara Fernando, who was also out of the squad for the Pakistan series, got the nod to play the ongoing one day series at Dubai. His performance in the one day series has earned him a berth in the test squad again for the South African tour.
Mendis is brought into the squad as cover to Suraj Randiv, while Fernando replaces the injured Dammika Prasad for the upcoming tour of South Africa.
The selectors were forced to exclude quickies Nuwan Kulasekara
and Shaminda Eranga and wicket keeper Prasanna Jayawardene due to injuries.
"We have had to reshuffle the squad because of injuries," said chairman of selectors Duleep Mendis.
Sri Lanka is scheduled to play the practice match against South Africa A in Benomi starting on Dec 9, 2011.
Sri Lanka are going to play 3 tests against South Africa at Centurion, Durban and CapeTown during a six week tour starting from Dec 15 to Jan 7, 2012.
While the test squad has been announced, Sri Lanka Board is yet to announce the squad for the one day internationals strating from jan 11, 2012.
