New Delhi, Dec 9: Virender Sehwag's double hundred not only had millions of fans celebrating all over the world but even gave bookies a moment to celebrate. Betting on Sehwag's hundred began as he flew past fifty but the countdown for a double began as soon as he touched 100.
"In the end, we were betting on each ball and had hoped that an over boundary would take him to his double. A boundary did break hearts but it was one match the punters did not mind loosing money on," said a bookie.
The bookies expected the average betting to cross several crores by the time they even finished counting.
The cops said they have information that the entire country placed bets close to Rs 60 crore. "We had planned raids but since the entire event was driven by a single man's stay at the crease, lost the moment as soon as it came," said the source.
"The mode of operation of the betting racket was simple. The bets were taken during the match as the rate of the odds between playing teams originated from outside India.
