Sydney, Dec 31: Former Indian skipper Saurav Ganguly has said that the Indian coach Duncan Fletcher is currently under pressure after India's humiliating loss to Australia in Melbourne dampening its goal to win their first series on Australian soil.
After a disastrous tour of England where India were thrashed 4-0, Dun can Fletcher is now facing the prospect of another unfulfilled tour of Australia.
Moreover, his record as coach has a different story altogether. The teams coached by him have won only only one of the 11 Tests played at Australia and have lost 10, the latest being the 122 run loss to Australia at MCG on Thursday.
“He has had a tough time. It"s his fifth loss in his past five overseas Tests, so he will be under a bit of pressure. He has to turn it around," Ganguly said.
Now, with the team trailing 0-1 in the series, Fletcher faces an enormous challenge to motivate the players and also regroup the team, as the senior players were unhappy with the defensive field placings that allowed Aussie tailenders to post a crucial 43 run stand on Thursday morning.
As England coach, in 2002-03, the visitors were mauled 4-1, with the Ashes conceded in only 11 playing days.
Statistics apart, some Indian players do think that Fletcher is very good technically, echoing the same as their Proteas and British counterparts.
Now, Duncan Fletcher has a major task at hand, as India take on Australia in the second test at Sydney starting on Tuesday. The first challenge is to combat the tailenders while the next important one is to tackle the quicks.
