Retaining India's Big 3, a costly affair

Sydney, Jan 9: The stalwarts of Indian cricket, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, the Wall Rahul Dravid and the stylish right hander VVS Laxman's current form is costing the team dear as they have no other choice than retaining the seniors in the team as they have enough experience to back them against Australia.

Supposedly the best batting line-up India had ever had, with the right blend of youth and experience, Team India were termed 'favorites' at the start of the tour, while the idea misfired badly as the legends are undergoing a bad patch.

Sachin Tendulkar, though has the most runs in the series so far with 226 runs including 2 fifties as he has scored 73, 32 in the first Test at Melbourne, while he got to good starts but couldn't score big in the second Test as he scored 41 and 80 at Sydney.

Rahul Dravid, the second highest run scorer in Tests, just behind Sachin Tendulkar, has not been in great form in the current tour of Australia as he has scored just 112 runs from 4 innings (68, 0, 5 & 29). Moreover, he has been bowled thrice in this series as that accounts to more worries as he has been dismissed similarly 13 times in the last 12 months which includes a straight 6 times out of nine innings.

VVS Laxman, another important pillar of the Indian batting line-up has been a big let down as he has scored just 71 runs off 4 innings in the current tour. His scores of 2, 1, 2 and 66 suggest that his innings are not very very special anymore as his innings was tormenting Aussies and was considered to be a nightmare a few years ago.

This is definitely a concern as these players happen to be back bone of India's batting order. These statistics further hurt India as the total contribution from the trio (Sachin Tendulkar-Rahul Dravid-VVS Laxman) has been a mere 409 runs including both the Test matches.

This further increases India's woes as they are up against a depleted team which looks pretty confident of beating India 4-0 though battling injuries. The next match at Perth awaits Indian Team as they will be tested on a green pitch yet again, the fastest pitch concern as they happen on Australian soil.

Now, with less than a week to go for the third Test Down Under, Perth awaits India's arrival as the Big 3 need to work hard this week in order to manage to survive the axe as rumours about Rohit Sharma to be given a chance to play in the 3rd Test ahead of VVS Laxman is also making rounds.

Many former players have voiced their opinion on this regard and unanimously vote for Rohit Sharma as they want the Team management to sack Laxman following his dismal show, looks like the team management is kind enough to give Laxman another chance keeping in mind his previous records against Australia.

But, naturally it doesn't serve the purpose as the Big 3 have failed to provide any spark in their batting except Sachin Tendulkar who has scored 226 runs, to back him. Rahul Dravid definitely needs a big score as he has been outshadowed by Ashwin, a spinner and a lower-order batsman who has relatively scored 143 in four innings, which happens to be better than Dravid's 112, Dhoni's 88, Sehwag's 108, Gambhir's 99 and ofcourse Laxman's 71.

This makes the team management to think more and take a decision as the pillars of the Indian batting line-up are slowly losing strength and might collapse soon if not immediately. This makes one feel, India's Big 3 are consuming more space in the playing XI as their contribution has not been much in the last 4 innings.
