Dilshan resigns as Sri Lanka captain

Colombo, Jan 23: Tillakaratne Dilshan has resigned as Sri Lankan captain from all three formats of the game, a day after the ODI series against South Africa ended, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said on Monday.

Sri Lanka had lost the three-match Test series 2-1 and five-match one-day series 3-2.

Dishan took over as captain from Kumar Sangakkara after the 2011 World Cup and led his team tours to England, the UAE and South Africa.

"T.M. Dilshan sent his resignation from the captaincy of the national team to Sri Lanka Cricket a short while ago," SLC said in a text message alert to its subscribers as quoted by a news agency.

SLC was expected to offer the captaincy to Mahela Jayawardene, who said he will need some time to think over it when the offer was made.
