'Sack Fletcher', says Farokh Engineer

Chennai, Feb 1: Former Indian wicket-keeper batsman, Farokh Engineer has said Indian coach, Duncan Fletcher is the most useless guy, and would have sacked the coach as he had not made any difference to the team.

The Lancashire based former Indian cricketer who was in Chennai for a coaching stint, in his recent interview to Mid-day has said, "Duncan Fletcher is the most useless guy. I would kick him out first. I was never in favour of him coming in as coach. "

He has further said, he knew Fletcher couldn't make a difference as he doesn't communicate properly urging this factor being the major reason for India's dismal performance.

Duncan Fletcher, who took over as Indian coach after the World Cup last year, has not been impressive as his track records suggest that he hasn't done anything great to help the Indian team retain its No 1 position in Tests as they have slipped to the third position in ICC Test rankings.

Since April 2011, India has witnessed two consecutive wipe-outs in Test series on foreign soil, while the team has registered another low, after 8 successive losses abroad, questioning the role played by the coach.

Statistics add more fury to this burning issue, as India lost their Number One position and now are placed at third after having lost 7 points during the disastrous tour Down Under.

Team India had secured 129 points during Dec 2010, gradually after the humiliation in England and Australia, has slipped to 111.10

Farokh Engineer further said, "I knew he was never going to make a difference. The guy has no personality, he doesn't communicate properly. When you don't do that well, how are you going to get the best out of the players"?

All odds are against the man, coaching Team India at the moment, as Farokh Engineer has said, he has also heard a few players also express similar views while he was the coach of England.

I've heard this from players who worked with him when he was coach of England. Very few had good things to say about him.

The 73-year old former Indian cricketer, has not only criticised the coach but also the captain, MS Dhoni, says he would serious think of changing the captain, but since there aren't any options, might probably continue with him.

"Dhoni certainly needs to improve his captaincy. He has made far too many blunders. He made a mockery of Indian cricket when he came on to bowl in the Lord's Test.Farokh Engineer has said he is disappointed with Dhoni's moves in Test cricket though it has worked in ODIs, feels he was just lucky to have taken India to a statistical peak, and was acclaimed the greatest captain India has ever produced.
