Mirpur, Feb 11: West Indies explosive batsman Chris Gayle smashed a 44-ball century to ensure a 10-wicket win for Barisal Burners over Sylet Royals in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match at the Sher-e Bangla National Stadium at Mirpur on Friday.
Barisal Burners, chasing 166 to win, reached the target in 13.1 overs as Gayle remained unbeaten after his hurricane innings of 101 off 44 balls while Pakistan's Ahmed Shehzad also remained unbeaten after scoring 56 off 35 balls.
Gayle storm hit Sylet Royals right from the start of the innings, as he went after medium pacers Rubel Hossain and Sohail Tanvir. His century knock included 10 huge hits and seven boundaries. Though Pakistan opener, Shehzad scored 56*, he couldn't match the batting prowess of Gayle as he had to be content with nine fours and a six.
Gayle's innings tormented the Kiwi all-rounder Scott Styris, as he conceded 27 runs in one over, while Somerset all-rounder Peter Trego was also smacked for three sixes in an over which conceded 23 runs.
On a day which best suited Gayle, everything he touched hit the stands, as Alok Kapali and Noor Hossain both faced the devastating opener's fury as were hit for 19 runs each in their respective overs.
Earlier in the day, Sylet Royals made a decent start as they posted 165/4 in their allotted 20 overs, while Trego top scored with 62 and Kapali also contributed with a fine half century.
Moral of the story, when Gayle storm hits, it's impossible for opponents to take cover! Indeed Royal Challengers Bangalore will be very happy to see the developments as they have retained the dashing opener in the team for the fifth edition of the IPL which gets underway in Chennai on April 4, 2012.
