New Delhi, Feb 23: Delhi Daredevils side has appointed Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene as Virender Sehwag's deputy for the fifth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) to be held in April and May, 2012.
Team mentor T A Sekar, said it was an easy decision to make as he has vast experience which made us select him as Sehwag's deputy.
"He has an excellent track record as a leader of men and draws enormous respect from his team-mates," said Sekar.
"We are aware of the immense value that Mahela brings to the table and are sure that the team will benefit from his presence in the leadership team."
Sekar also said that Sehwag had welcomed Jayawardene's selection as vice-captain. "Viru told us that he would find Mahela's experience as a leader very handy. We are confident that they will bring the best out of the squad this season. That will enable us stay competitive through the season - and have the chance to celebrate Mahela's 35th birthday on May 27," he said.
Jayawardene led the now defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala team in the fourth edition of IPL. All Kochi players were added to the list of cricketers to be auctioned.
During the auction that was held on February 4, 2012 in Bangalore, Delhi bid for the experienced batsman, at a tag of $1.4 million.
Jayawardene has led Sri Lanka in 11 T20 internationals, 102 one-day internationals and 28 Test matches. Of these, Sri Lanka have won eight T20s, 59 ODIs and 15 Test matches.
With a good track record, it remains to be seen if Delhi can overcome the initial hiccups that troubled them in the first four editions of IPL.
