Kolkata, Mar 1: Virender Sehwag puts an end to speculations regarding his non-inclusion for the Asia Cup as selectors termed that he was rested on medical grounds, has said, he had asked BCCI to rest him for the Asia Cup.
It is learnt that Team India's physio Evan Speechly had submitted a fitness report to the BCCI ahead of the national selectors' meeting on Wednesday.
Further Team coach Duncan Fletcher and skipper MS Dhoni had spoken to the selectors about Sehwag wanted rest after a strenuous tour of Australia while Krishnamachari Srikkanth, called up Sehwag to get an update and since the player insisted he wanted rest he was rested for the Asia Cup.
"I have back spasms. I need some rest. I have never kept my team management in the dark as far as fitness is concerned. "My injury is open for everyone to see. I have never hidden my injury before, or fitness problems. Even my shoulder operation was planned after consulting the then coach Gary Kirsten and skipper MS Dhoni," Sehwag told Mid Day.
Based on the Speechly's report and messages from the team management, the selectors decided to rest Sehwag.
But why did Kris Srikkanth not clear the air when he was asked if Sehwag was dropped or rested is still a mystery.
Interestingly, Sachin Tendulkar too insisted that he wanted to play the Asia Cup and the selectors included him in the 15 member squad.
While Zaheer Khan has hamstring niggles, Umesh Yadav was given rest after a long series, as Srikkanth confirms that the pacers were rested on medical grounds.
