Dhaka, Mar 14: Sri Lanka suffered a major blow ahead of their crucial Asia Cup match against Pakistan on Thursday as all-rounder Angelo Mathews was ruled out of the tournament with a calf injury.
Mathews, who missed the tri-series finals in Australia, also sat out of the team's opening game against India on Tuesday. Now, he will head home after failing fitness tests.
"The last couple of days Angelo has had some fitness tests, he hasn't pulled through those well, so we made a call to send him back home," Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene said on Wednesday.
Sri Lanka haven't named a replacement for the all-rounder and Jayawardene said that Mathews will try to get ready for the Tests against England at home.
"He will try to get ready for the Test matches that starts in about ten days' time. The selectors back home will decide and send a replacement for us," Jayawardene added.
Sri Lanka are already without another all-rounder Thisara Perera, who also missed the tri-series finals due to back injury. They lost their first game against India by 50 runs. Sri Lanka have to win on Thursday to make their final chances brighter.
