PIL filed to halt India-Lanka games

Madurai, Mar 22: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking cancellation of cricketing ties between India and Sri Lanka until disputes between Sinhalese and Tamils are settled and peace prevails.

An advocate, S Calvin Christopher has filed a petition regarding Lanka-India cricketing ties, stating that whenever the two teams clash and the Islanders were defeated by Team India, during the World Cup last year or recently during the tri-series in Australia and Asia Cup in Bangladesh, there was backlash from the Island's navalmen on innocent fishermen in Tamil Nadu.

Christopher has claimed that after India defeated Sri Lanka to register a phenomenal victory in the recently concluded tri series in Australia, petrol bombs were hurled at Indian fishermen.

Taking into consideration the safety of Indian fishermen, the advocate has requested the court to put a stay on future clashes between India and Sri Lanka until disputes are settled.
