Kolkata, Apr 5: Morne Morkel and Irfan Pathan were Delhi Daredevils' heroes as the Virender Sehwag-led side defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by eight wickets in the second game of IPL 5 at the Eden Gardens here on Thursday.

The match was reduced to 12 overs per side after a lengthy rain delay. Chasing 98 to win in 12 overs, Delhi reached the target with five balls to spare. Man-of-the-match Irfan was the top scorer of the match with an unbeaten 42 off 20 balls with three sixes and two fours. Delhi ended with 100/2 in 11.1 overs.
It was a day where the younger Pathan triumphed over the elder Yusuf Pathan. At one stage, Delhi were in a spot of bother with the required run rate crossing nine per over. They needed 28 off 18 balls. But Irfan smashed two sixes off South African paceman Marchant de Lange in the 10th over to make it comfortable in the end. Irfan took 17 runs off the 10th over which proved decisive in the end result.
Sehwag and Aaron Finch had put Delhi on track with an opening wicket partnership of 49 in 6.2 overs. Finch made 30 while Sehwag scored 20.
Earlier, South African paceman Morne Morkel took 3/18 as Delhi Daredevils restricted Kolkata Knight Riders to 97/9 in 12 overs.
Morkel was the star with the ball as he took two wicket in two balls at one stage and later added more dismissal, also a bowled. This was his best bowling performance in IPL. First, Morkel clean bowled his compatriot Jacques Kallis and Manoj Tiwary in successive deliveries in the third over. His third victim was captain Gautam Gambhir, who played on to his stumps.
Morkel was on a hat-trick but Yusuf Pathan denied that. However, the big-hitting Pathan was soon sent back by Umesh Yadav for a duck. It was a disappointing effort from the home team in front of 56,742 spectators.
Yadav and South African left-arm spinner Roelof van de Merwe chipped in with two wickets apiece. Yadav too was impressive with figures of 2/9 in 2 overs.
KKR batsmen never looked comfortable in the middle after being sent in by DD. Barring Laxmi Ratan Shukla, who top scored with 26 off 17 balls with one four and two sixes, the rest failed.
The slump started with Brendon McCullum going back to the pavilion in the second over, LBW by Van de Merwe. From then on, it was DD all the way. KKR were reduced to 31/4 and later they were in further trouble at 55/6. Debabrata Das made 18 and Gambhir contributed 16 in a total of 97/9 in 12 overs.
Only three batsmen managed to get into double figures. In all, the hosts hit five sixes and six boundaries.
Delhi Daredevils captain Virender Sehwag won the toss and opted to field after the match was reduced to 12 over per side.
Rain had earlier delayed the toss. And the players had to wait for close to two and half hours before coming out to take the field. The match was set to start at 10.30 PM IST with 12 overs per side.
Mumbai Indians won the inaugural match on Wednesday by beating Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
