Gambhir rues batting collapse

Kolkata, Apr 6: Kolkata Knight Riders' skipper Gautam Gambhir feels top order collapse was the reason for their defeat to Delhi Daredevils in the rain-truncated IPL match at Eden Gardens on Thursday.

Gambhir admitted that it was a close game but felt the loss of wickets early in the innings cost them the match as they were reeling at 20/3 after 3 overs.

Though he was clearly disappointed with the loss, Gambhir tried to hide it stating the positives from the match.

"He (Debabrata Das) batted well at the nets. We knew he had the potential. Hopefully he can take this form forward. Laxmi Ratan Shukla too is in great form. We hope to take the positives. We hope to learn from the mistakes."

When asked if he was satisfied with the wicket, he said "There is always a lot of talk about the wicket. But it was a good wicket which can be assessed from chasing 97 runs from 12 overs. They played well" after the team's loss to Delhi Daredevils on Thursday evening.

Gambhir also admitted that toss never played a role in the result of the game, as the team needs to play smart and quality cricket.

"Toss can never be a factor. If you play good cricket, toss cannot be a factor. After losing four quick wickets, we did well to get to 97. It was a great effort. But they played some smart and quality cricket."

"I would have opted to bowl (after winning the toss). But there are certain things which are not in your hands."
