Chasing 158 to win, Delhi Daredevils got off to a very good start as Aaron Finch scored 3 boundaries off three balls, while Zaheer Khan got rid of Virender Sehwag in the first over to give RCB a chance to play for a win.
Finch and Naman Ojha were playing the pacers with ease as they added 42 runs off 40 balls for the second wicket. When things were looking out of control, Vettori introduced the legendary spinner Muralitharan into the attack which worked as he got rid of the partnership.
Muralitharan's magical spell did the trick as RCB were back into the match. His magical figures of 3/24 off 4 overs was very crucial for RCB as they were in need of wickets when Naman Ojha and Aaron Finch were going strong after adding 42 runs for the second wicket.
As the required run-rate increased every over, Delhi batsmen were forced to go for big shots and so did Irfan Pathan. He smashed a six and a four off Murali's last over but that couldn't help Delhi in winning the match as they were 21 short of a victory.
The match went on to the wire, as Delhi put up a good fight with Pathan executing the shots to escalate the run-rate and get past the target.
Irfan Pathan (24), Naman Ojha (33), Aaron Finch (25) got the starts but wickets at quick succession did not ensure a partnership which resulted in the loss as they finished with 137/7 in their allotted 20 overs.
While it was the same for RCB when they were put to bat by Delhi. Playing the match without Gayle was evident as batsmen looked rusty except Andrew McDonald, AB deVilliers and Vinay Kumar who helped RCB reach a decent total of 157/8 off 20 overs.
RCB reached 41/1 in five overs after being put into bat by Delhi Daredevils. Within 3 overs, the fate of the match was sealed as Morkel, Maxwell and Bracewell got a wicket each to dismiss RCB top order cheaply. RCB were reduced to 69/4 in 10 overs.
AB deVilliers, who completed 1000 runs in IPL today, played a magnificent knock as he scored an unbeaten 64*, which included 5 boundaries and 2 sixes won him the man of the match award. 17 runs off Pathan's over, helped RCB race to 147/6 after 19 overs while the highest being the third over as Pathan had conceded 19 off that over.
Vinay Kumar added 54 runs for the 7th wicket with AB deVilliers which came off just 33 balls before Vinay was dismissed by Bracewell for 18.
Vinay was impressive as well with his knock of 18, which included a boundary. More importantly his partnership with AB de Villiers changed the fate of the match as RCB were reeling at 85/5 at one point.
Similarly, Andrew McDonald was at his best as he drove the ball to all the corners of the stadium, giving RCB the momentum as they scored runs at 9.82 runs per over at one stage which gradually decreased as the game progressed.
McDonald's knock of 30 off 19 balls entertained the crowd as they were disappointed after Gayle was ruled out of the match due to an injury. His knock included 2 huge hits and 4 boundaries.
RCB after winning their first match against Delhi Daredevils at their home ground, will play Kolkata Knight Riders at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 10, Tuesday.
