Bangalore, Apr 9: Royal Challengers Bangalore are facing dilemma as they take on Kolkata Knight Riders in Game 10 of IPL 5 here at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday.
RCB will have to accommodate their explosive opener Chris Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan who were absent from the win against Delhi Daredevils. While Gayle was rested due to fitness issues, Dilshan was away on international duty and has joined the team on Sunday.
With only four overseas players to fit into the XI, it will be interesting to see who are the two foreign cricketers to make way for the West Indian-Sri Lankan pair.
Australian all-rounder Andrew McDonald, who replaced Gayle at the top of the order, played a good knock. Sri Lankan offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan too shone with the ball with three wickets.
AB deVilliers, who scored an unbeaten 64, also demands a place in the playing XI, which has put Vettori and the team management in a dilemma as they have to choose only four players and rest two players in order to accomodate the explosive openers.
Apart from this issue, RCB have no issues with the side, as the team defended 157 runs with ease to register a 20 run victory over Virender Sehwag-led Delhi Daredevils as three overseas players helped the team register its first win in IPL 5 - AB de Villiers, Andrew McDonald and Muttaiah Muralitharan.
Chris Gayle, who joined RCB after two weeks into IPL 4, happened to be the lucky mascot for Mallya-owned Royal Challengers Bangalore. His century against KKR off 55 balls is remembered even to this day, as he played his first match of the season after replacing the injured Nannes in the team.
His inclusion changed the team's fortunes as RCB won all the nine matches after losing three matches during the start of IPL 4.
RCB have a lot of depth in their batting line-up Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Mayank Agarwal and Vettori everyone can contribute, moreover tailenders Vinay Kumar, Zaheer Khan, Harshal Patel can also come in handy with quick runs.
Bowling department is also equally good, as Zaheer, Vinay, Murali, Vettori all have been impressive in containing the batsmen and keeping the run-rate under check.
On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders having lost both their matches in the fifth season of IPL, need to get the basics right as they have a fragile batting line-up. The team needs a good partnership from the top order, as they are struggling to score runs which needs to be set ahead of the team's third match against RCB on Tuesday.
Manoj Tiwary is the only promising player as he has got a fifty in the previous match against Rajasthan Royals while others failed to create an impact.
Starting from skipper Gautam Gambhir, none of the top order batsmen have taken the responsibility to get some runs on the board as it looks like a unit that never binds. With a star-studded batting and bowlling line-up, the team has never played to its potential in the fifth edition of IPL. If they are looking to win their third match against RCB, they need a few partnerships, good knocks at the start of the innings and bowling performance to back them.
Losing wickets in quick succession has been the issue that Gambhir's team need to assess as that has played a huge role in the team's loss against Delhi Daredevils in the rain-truncated match and Rajasthan Royals.
RCB being very positive after their first win against Delhi Daredevils, will look to continue momentum by registering another win against KKR, while Gambhir's men would look forward to put up a good show as a team, in order to register their first win in the fifth edition of IPL.
